Throughout the week of June 20-24, Workforce Solutions of North Central Pennsylvania has encouraged students in grades 7-12 to participate in Camp Exploration – Manufacturing. The program is a hands on day camp for students to be introduced and learn what skills are needed to work in manufacturing.

Colleen Prechtel from Workforce Solutions is the facilitator of the program. She recently spoke with local WTAJ. “We are doing camp exploration because it allows students to see what manufacturing careers we have in our area. A lot of students don’t realize we have the same careers as Pittsburgh and Philadelphia or a larger city. So they think their opportunities are limited by where we live since we live in a rural community,” Prechtl said. “By showing the plants and careers within the plants they get to see that they have the same options as large cities so we hope to keep future workforce here.”

This is a fantastic opportunity for young people to be introduced to manufacturing. There are fascinating companies in our local area and they get to see the processes start to finish and all of the great people that work behind the scenes to make things happens for businesses and consumers around the world. The students will visit or have visited Phoenix Sintered Metals, Beverage Air, Gasbarre Products, and Miller Fabrication Solutions.

Please encourage young people to participate in these initiatives. If we are going to thrive as manufacturers, we need these programs that introduce students to the great career possibilities in manufacturing!
