What is Steam Treating?

Steam Treating is a time-temperature-atmosphere dependent process employing a steam atmosphere introduced at the appropriate time to create a tightly adherent oxide layer. The performance and quality of the surface and subsurface layers depends to a great extent on surface cleanliness and the overall (atmosphere) integrity of the equipment.* 

Other common names include: bluing and blackening.
