Annealing requires heating and holding at a suitable temperature and then cooling at a suitable rate for such purposes as reducing hardness, improving machinability, facilitating cold working, producing a desired microstructure (for subsequent operations) or obtaining desired mechanical, physical or other properties.

Bright Annealing is a type of annealing process that occurs in a controlled atmosphere or vacuum containing inert gases to minimize oxidation. As a result, this method helps to generate a brighter and smoother surface with a thin oxide layer and improved corrosion resistance. Vacuum furnaces tend to achieve the most effective atmospheric quality for bright annealing processes.

Annealing furnaces heat materials through three primary stages:

Recovery: Furnace raises the temperature to relieve internal stress.

Recrystallization: The furnace heats the substance above its recrystallization temperature and below its melting point, resulting in grain formation.

Grain Growth: New grains develop as the material cools, making it more pliable.
