Nitriding is a thermochemical case hardening process that diffuses nitrogen into the surface of a metal to create a case-hardened surface. The metal often is placed in contact with ammonia, which allows the transfer of nitrogen to the surface during its thermal decomposition to nitrogen and hydrogen. This process is most often used on low-alloy steels. They are also used on titanium, aluminum and molybdenum.

Typical applications for Nitriding include gears, crankshafts, camshafts, cam followers, valve parts, extruder screws, die-casting tools, forging dies, extrusion dies, firearm components, injectors and plastic-mold tools.

If your application requires a heavy load and an increase of surface hardening, wear resistance and fatigue life and it’s a ferrous material then it can be gas nitrided up to 5% chromium. Another amazing benefit of gas nitriding is quenching is unneeded in addition if large batch sizes are needed the only constraint is the size of the furnace.
